Do we really need the big red "Please use correct English" on the front page?

Has it really been that big a problem?

  • Yeah, it got tiring to have to be someone else's spell and grammar check. -atrizu 17:46, 6 September 2007 (MSD)
    • Would that person be me? :) Even when I do proofread my edits I usually don't pick up on mistakes, unless I come back and do it later. As for the spelling I am using Proper English. Would you rather American English? - if that's the case we should change the sign to read so. ;) Hehe, I'm just teasing. I'll try and be more conscientious with my edits. And I got rid of a couple of headings, to create a little more room (and alliances should be with commands and the buildings page doesn't belong on the main page) and updated the announcements a bit. I'got a lot more free time over the next several weeks, I'm planning on knocking off a bunch of stuff, but we could really use some more help around here. -Penguin 14:49, 2 November 2007 (MDT)
      • I don't remember it being you. I think it was just random people in general. Anyways, I didn't realize so much needed to be done. I have been working on Future_Site:Main_Page a little. I had forgotten about the projects page and will see what I can do soon. -atrizu 09:24, 3 November 2007 (MDT)
        • That's fine. I actually resurrected the projects page a little while back. I do think we need some more staff writers. Perhaps we can organise some sort of promotion or competition with Scepter? Penguin 09:49, 3 November 2007 (MDT)
          • Talk it over with Myrddin. -atrizu 15:50, 5 November 2007 (MST)

[edit] Issue with the skin

There are a number of places where the wiki's skin doesn't set the dark background correctly and renders invisible white-on-white or yellow-on-white text. The login and create account pages for one, as well as the diff from page history. These pages are pretty much unreadable. --The Nose 01:01, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

  • The problems with the skin seem to have all started occurring at the same problem. Thanks for the info. We are working on finding the cause. --atrizu 01:56, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
    • I changed those two pages, if you see any other places just tell me so i can fix it there was a problem with a new version and my FTP screwed up and overwrote the css so i lost some stuff. --Myrddin 02:23, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
They look good now, thanks. --The Nose 17:54, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
There's also a problem with the watch text that comes up when adding a page to the watchlist. Might I suggest changing the skin to something like Wikipedia -- whitish background with black text and blue links? Most MediaWiki wikis seem to use that sort of skin, meaning easier use for viewers and contributors alike.

The skin stays like it is for now, until a new theme is implemented (if such is done). The watchbox will be changed to fit the theme though. Phaze 08:44, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I've found a few more. They're at the bottom of my own user stylesheet at User:The Nose/monobook.css‎. --The Nose 21:31, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Editors

The Stargate Worlds Wiki (SGW):About seems to indicate that this is only maintained by the Devs and a "Guild". Where do the general public fit in? Are they considered part of the "joint collaboration" that makes up this wiki? By the sounds of it, it seems that the wiki, in terms of its purpose for the public, is generally just for looking up information. Is that correct?

If the general public is considered to be on the same standing as the two organisations mentioned above, I would be extremely interested in helping to build this wiki. While my main focus may not be centred around just content, I believe I'm experienced enough in creating policy and discussing whatever needs to be discussed. I'm also an avid Stargate fan and, hopefully, will buy Stargate Worlds.

I'm a regular user, and administrator, of ArenaNet's official Guild Wars wikis, so I can back up my experience.

  • SWW is hosted by the leader of a guild, yes. And the devs do support us and at times instruct us in certain matters. The public is welcomed and encouraged to contribute. The wiki is for looking up information. I can't think of anything else would it be used for. So, I invite you to contribute. If you wish to serve the wiki in an official capacity, contact Myrddin, the owner/founder of SWW --atrizu 00:01, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
(Same user as above, registered). Ok, thanks for the info. By the way, when I meant using the wiki as an information-base, I meant using it for that reason only, not for contributing to the wiki. Perhaps the About page should be changed slightly to include the role of "ordinary people"?

  • If you'd like to make a contribution worthy of "mad props," you could email me a modified version. (You mentioned that you "I'm experienced enough in creating policy".) --atrizu 00:17, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Ah perhaps I wasn't clear as to what I meant by create policy -- I meant generally creating policy according to consensus and what the community think policies should consist of; policies on user conduct, administration and general article retention. I'm discussion-orientated, in that I think primary decisions should be made with the input of the community -- especially when nothing exists as of yet. As the wiki progresses further, I can see how that system may change into a hierarchical system, where only administrators decide.
I don't think this wiki has enough users yet to have in place a system of policy, so that would probably wait until the beta or official release of the game when people will start contributing/viewing. Using a Guild Wars wiki as an example (not the one mentioned above, another one that I used as a reference) -- policy was only created there when they received hundreds of active users (a fair amount for a game wiki), pushing a necessity of policy. In the beginning, the owners of the site generally made their wiki what they wanted it to be, up to and including how administrators should act. I think that's a good system to follow, so I don't think policy is needed yet. Unless, of course, that's what is wanted by the community.
-- pling | talk 00:32, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Ehh, I think I just realised you meant a modified version of the About... (silly me ^^). I was thinking too much about a core policy system. I don't have much time at the moment, and I'm kind of tired, so I'll contact you with a version some time tomorrow.
Anyway, I think the above paragraph generally sums up my view on wiki policy so perhaps it can still be of use. -- pling | talk 01:25, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm of the opinion that we should have clear policy in place before the huge influx of users. I'd rather that than create policy when an 'incident' occurs demonstrating it's needed. As for any further discussion, I'd like to invite you to use our forums (see the link at in the sidebar) and browse the official game forums to familiarise yourself with the community.Penguin 08:08, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
